Making A Charity Donation

Sharing our surplus with those that are less fortunate is always an honorable activity. However, most of us want to share what we can with organizations that will reap the most benefit. Here are some things to keep in mind before engaging in a charity donation, so that both you and the organization realize the maximum amount of satisfaction.

One of the first things to do is assess the needs of the organization versus what you have to offer in the way of a donation. The idea is to place your items where they will do the most good. For example, if you have older clothing in good condition to give away, you may find they will be far more useful if donated to an organization that helps victims of natural disasters. Many standing charities have more clothing than they know what to do with, but in disaster aid, clean clothing in good shape is often at a premium, especially for persons who are larger or smaller than the national average.

Second, consider what the proceeds from the use of your donation will do. Chances are there are some particular causes that are near to your heart. For example, if a loved one has died of cancer, you may be drawn to make a donation to an organization that engages in cancer research, or provides care to persons who are living with cancer. You will get a great deal of satisfaction by providing resources that help to advance a cause that is of especial interest to you.

Last, make sure you make your charity donation to an organization that is recognized as tax deductible. There are two good reasons to follow this counsel. First, if donations to the charity qualify as deductions, that means the organization has met essential criteria such as operations, organizational structure, and a high percentage of collected proceeds going to the cause. Second, being able to declare the donation on your taxes helps to encourage you to give more of your surplus when you can, since the effort provides both emotional and financial satisfaction. Making donations are meant to be an activity that benefits all parties. With some basic guidelines to help govern your donation habits, it is possible for everyone to benefit.
